IP Australia is a Government agency with a passion for bright ideas, creativity and breakthrough technologies. We administer intellectual property (IP) rights and legislation relating to patents, trade marks, designs and plant breeder’s rights, helping individuals and organisations to protect their ideas and inventions and promote innovation and business growth for Australia. We assess new inventions to decide whether a patent should be awarded. We have a role in community education and awareness activities and we provide policy advice to government on intellectual property issues including contributing to trade negotiations and international forums and activities to improve IP Rights protection globally.
We are a portfolio agency within the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. With over 1000 employees, we employ over 350 scientists and engineers. We are primarily located in Canberra and Melbourne and have staff working across the country under a flexible working model.
