Graduate UX Designer at Queensland Government Digital Graduate Program
Master of Interaction Design at The University of Queensland (UQ)
4.15 AM
Today I woke up extra early to have a gym session with my friend before we both went to work. After getting out of bed, I quickly brush my teeth, get dressed and have a quick snack before I make my way to the gym with my friend.
5.15 AM
After I finish my gym session, I head home to have a shower, have breakfast, and start getting ready for going into work today. I am incredibly lucky to be able to work from home a few days a week as it promotes a better work/life balance.
Today I made and packed my lunch with some snacks as I sometimes find it to be expensive to buy lunch and takes time to get lunch and come back to the office. This way I also get a good variety of lunches. I take my time getting ready as I still have lots of time before I need to leave.
7.00 AM
I start walking to the train station which is close to home and I find taking public transport to work a lot quicker and cheaper than driving to work. While on the train I listen to a podcast to make time pass quickly.
8.15 AM
I arrive at work early and put my lunch away and fill up my water bottle. I head towards my desk, greeting my colleagues as I go. I start my day by checking and responding to any emails and new meetings. I check my calendar to see that I have two meetings and I prepare for them.
8.30 AM
Recently I have been working on redesigning some websites which includes researching best practices for components and page layouts. I type my notes and work on designing the components and page layouts in Figma and making sure they adhere to the design system being used.
10.00 AM
I get ready and join my team stand up in a Teams Meeting. During the stand up, we check-in as a team and discuss our workload, how we are progressing through our projects and deliverables. I use this opportunity to ask my colleagues questions on how to approach any roadblocks I am facing on what I am currently working on.
11.00 AM
Next, I joined another meeting scheduled today which is a User Interface Community of Practice meeting where members get together bi-monthly to discuss anything UI. There are various Community of Practice groups about different topics open for anyone in government to join and participate. I found today's meeting valuable and interesting to listen to the latest news and learn from others.
12.00 PM
Lunch time! I ate my lunch in the kitchen alongside my colleagues and fellow graduates from different teams. During this time, we catch up about each other’s day.
12.30 PM
After lunch I get straight back to working on designing website components, layouts and researching. Depending on what project I am working on, the work varies slightly.
2.30 PM
After a while, I decided to take a small break to stretch out my legs, refill my water bottle and eat some fruit for more energy. Afterwards I go back to my desk and check my emails before continuing my work.
4.15 PM
Just before I finish the day, I check my calendar and emails and mark down any new meetings and deadlines into my diary. Once I am done, I pack up and leave my desk nice and tidy for the next day and make my way to the train station.
5.00 PM
I get off the train and start walking home as the sun slowly beings to set. Once I get home, I unpack my bag and have a shower. Some afternoons after work I go to Rugby League training to train with my teammates for the game on the weekend, however, today is not one of those days.
6.00 PM
Sometimes I make dinner after work, however I luckily have leftovers from the night before. I sit and eat dinner while catching up on the tv shows I am currently watching.
7.00 PM
After dinner I hop online to play some video games with my friends for a bit before jumping off and heading towards bed to continue reading the book I am currently reading.
9.30 PM
Finally, I put the book away after telling myself one more chapter, I do my usual nighttime routine and go to bed.
