About the Queensland Audit Office

On behalf of the Auditor-General, we provide insights to hundreds of state and local government clients on delivering better public services for Queenslanders. As the state's independent auditor, we are vital to Queensland's integrity system, giving parliament and the public trusted assurance.

We use some of the most contemporary practices in today's professional services industry to:

  • deliver high-quality financial, assurance, and information systems services
  • give public sector entities insights into their performance, risks and financial management
  • report to parliament on the results of our work
  • investigate financial waste and mismanagement
  • share best practices across our client base and industry.

Working at QAO

You have a choice of commencing in October 2023 or February 2024.

Innovation, teamwork and relationships are at the heart of what we do. We invest in advanced audit capabilities with integrated analytics and information systems audits. Other benefits include:

  • a starting salary of $68,414 plus superannuation
  • travel throughout Queensland with your colleagues when performing client visits
  • Brisbane-based with flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance
  • state-of-the-art technology to enable you to work in the head office, at client sites or at home
  • active social club organising events throughout the year.

Who can apply

To apply for the graduate program, you will need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen/Permanent Resident, or have permanent working rights within Australia
  • Be studying, or have studied, at an Australian university in an appropriate tertiary qualification accounting, commerce, business, data science, information technology, information systems, mathematics/statistics, public policy or management.
  • You must have completed a minimum of undergraduate-level study within the last 2 years, or will complete a minimum of undergraduate-level study before the program starts.

How to apply – closing date 28 April 2023

  • You should provide a copy of your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and your academic transcript. A cover letter is optional (it is not a requirement).
  • Clearly state your tertiary qualification and graduation date (including pending dates) in your CV – your application may be unable to proceed if this is unclear.

As part of the final stages of the selection process, you must also provide 2 professional referees. It would help if you started thinking about who you would like to ask to complete a referee report as the panel will want to hear from your recent supervisors/managers and your most recent employer.

Pros and cons of working at Queensland Audit Office

Pros

  • The variety of work and knowledgeable colleagues around you. The social club is a great aspect also!

  • The work that the office does is very important for the state. It is reassuring to know that my role has some purpose in contributing to the greater good.

  • The best thing about working at QAO is its people. They are some of the most talented, helpful, supportive and friendly co-workers I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Secondly is the variety of work and clients that QAO audits. No 2 days are really alike.

  • Being able to complete meaningful work and contribute to better public services in Queensland. The opportunities to learn and grow with supportive teams.

  • Managers and coworkers are transparent with and reasonable regarding, their expectations of myself and my work. In addition, coworkers are very helpful and very understanding.

Cons

    • I don't really have anything negative to say. If I had one gripe it would be that it is time to replace the coffee machines.

    • The work completed on government audits is confidential, and therefore you cannot discuss the exciting and interesting areas of your job with friends or family.

    • Sets the bar too high for other workplaces.

    • Can't think of anything.

    • Lots of last-minute changes, more than necessary potentially.
