Eligibility:

  • Tertiary qualifications in one or more of the following areas: Bachelor of Surveying or Spatial Science from a recognised tertiary institution, or an equivalent qualification
  • Full Australian working rights must be held from when you start with the department and maintained throughout your employment.
  • A criminal history check will be undertaken prior to appointment as this role has access to sensitive data

Your role:

Marine Safety Queensland (MSQ) provides a contemporary regulatory framework and processes for Queensland waterways. We aim to reduce the number of marine transportation related incidents, fatalities and injuries. We focus on protecting the marine environment from ship sourced pollution. 

As either an Entry Level Hydrographic Surveyor or a Hydrographic Surveyor, you will plan and conduct hydrographic surveys and related projects throughout the state of Queensland. 

Travel for periods of up to four weeks duration to undertake, or supervise hydrographic surveys is required. Destinations are throughout Queensland and may at times include remote locations

Pros and cons of working at Department of Transport and Main Roads

Pros

  • The best thing about working at TMR are the hours and the flexibility. It enables me to have a work-life balance and actually spend time outside of the office.

  • The people are friendly and incredibly supportive and encourage you to ask questions as much as possible.

  • The amount of opportunities there are - I'm going from CSB to MSQ, which is such a cool chance.

  • I really like the Graduate program training they offer to us graduates. I am also interested in more internal face-to-face and online training.

  • The flexibility TMR provides is amazing.

Cons

    • Promotions and career progression are very slow.

    • Lots of red tape and approvals required before applying changes to a technical environment which can slow productivity.

    • There is not a lot of work for someone in my role in this team, so the work I am involved in does not match the work of my role.

    • There are no other TMR grads in my team and it's easy to feel pretty disconnected.

    • The company's office is in an inconvenient place where commuting can be a challenge.
