Your role:

We are involved in every mode of transport across Queensland. Asset management is key to ensuring the network continues to operate effectively.

If you join TMR as a Graduate Civil Engineer, you can develop a career in asset management, materials research, or any part of the infrastructure project lifecycle. With the diversity of our projects and organisation, you will get opportunities that private organisations can’t offer. You may move into alternative fields such as project management and will develop transferrable skills to move into leadership focused roles as you gain experience.

There are two roles available in Bundaberg, with PDO, you will support the Project Planning and Corridor Management teams. For Project Planning, with supervision and guidance from an experienced civil engineer you will contribute to the delivery of road infrastructure investment planning that could range from minor safety improvements to complex multi-disciplinary projects, by providing technical advice and project management support.

The other opportunity will be with RoadTek. RoadTek is a commercial business that provides transport infrastructure solutions for projects across Queensland. RoadTek is a multi-disciplined organisation that specialises in delivering technically difficult, hard-to-scope, high risk and short-lead-time projects. To find out more information on the RoadTek role please refer to the Variety of locations: Civil Engineer RoadTek link.

Check out the TMR Our Roles page for more information on the role and program by hitting the Apply button.

The program offerings include:

Learning and development: our program offers a diverse range of experiences, including on-the-job training, hybrid events, and skills-based online courses.

Employee benefits: participants receive permanent employment at the end of their program, connections to over 100 different career paths, and a minimum of two business area rotations during their two-year program.

Career progression: the program provides a foundation of networking and cross collaboration, support from mentors, and coaching from subject matter experts.

Work/life balance: participants benefit from flexible working hours and reasonable adjustment arrangements that support their individual needs and wellbeing.

Graduate experience

‘As a Graduate Civil Engineer working within the safety network team, we come up with solutions to problems. Sometimes it’s going to sites to identify solutions, meeting with teams to discuss requests that come in from the community, or attending local council meetings. I feel a sense of pride with how I help the community through making our roads safer.’ – Marco Perea, Graduate Civil Engineer

Pros and cons of working at Department of Transport and Main Roads

Pros

  • The best thing about working at TMR are the hours and the flexibility. It enables me to have a work-life balance and actually spend time outside of the office.

  • The people are friendly and incredibly supportive and encourage you to ask questions as much as possible.

  • The amount of opportunities there are - I'm going from CSB to MSQ, which is such a cool chance.

  • I really like the Graduate program training they offer to us graduates. I am also interested in more internal face-to-face and online training.

  • The flexibility TMR provides is amazing.

Cons

    • Promotions and career progression are very slow.

    • Lots of red tape and approvals required before applying changes to a technical environment which can slow productivity.

    • There is not a lot of work for someone in my role in this team, so the work I am involved in does not match the work of my role.

    • There are no other TMR grads in my team and it's easy to feel pretty disconnected.

    • The company's office is in an inconvenient place where commuting can be a challenge.
