The Graduate Program offers a Graduate Diploma in Meteorology so that you are equipped with a globally recognised qualification and skills to become the next generation of Meteorologists at the Bureau. Meteorology is more than just a career, it's a passion. Explore your options to specialise in meteorology, including working with the aviation, defence, and maritime industries, forecasting for emergency services or space weather, or supporting Australia's Antarctic operations.

Meteorologists deliver impact and value through customer-centred products and solutions designed to change behaviours that enhance our everyday lives and safety. This includes diagnosing the state of the atmosphere and oceans, producing forecasts and warnings, and communicating the impact of these products with a wide variety of customers and industries.

You'll learn how to:

  • Apply various scientific techniques, including data visualisation and analysis tools.
  • Analyse, and interpret meteorological data sources and numerical weather prediction model output to forecast atmospheric conditions.

You'll be able to transform studied theoretical knowledge into a solid foundation of skills on which to use to build your career.

Use the skills you learn to be there when it matters most for all Australians and all Australia, every day

Learn from some of Australia's leading scientists as you develop a deep knowledge of services for severe weather, marine and Antarctic environments, climate, water and volcanic ash prediction. A day in this role can include preparing and communicating weather forecasts for the public as well as specific users such as the emergency services sector.

Develop your skills among other like-minded scientists and future meteorologists

We're looking for graduates with a demonstrated commitment to life-long learning and a desire to work with the community, customers, partners, and stakeholders at the heart of our operations. The role includes working in a diverse team environment and using your initiative to solve problems and develop the skills needed to deliver impact and value to customers.

An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in science, engineering or another field with relevant studies in physics at the first-year level, and applied mathematics at the second-year level is mandatory.
