Embarking on your application journey for the Department of Home Affairs Graduate Development Program is an exciting step toward shaping a rewarding career. This guide will provide insights into what to expect during the process and how to best prepare.

Understand the timeline

The recruitment process spans several months and involves multiple stages designed to evaluate your suitability for the program. Patience and persistence are key as each stage builds on the previous one to ensure a thorough and fair selection.

Online application

Applications open 17 March 2025 and your first step is to create an account on our recruitment portal. During this stage, you will need to submit:

  • Personal details
  • Your academic transcript (as an attachment)
  • A statement verifying recognition of any overseas qualifications (if applicable)
  • A resume showcasing your skills, experiences and achievements
  • A brief pitch explaining why you want to work with the Department

Ensure your application is complete and accurate before submitting. Incomplete applications may not progress to the next stage.

Online assessment

Candidates who meet the initial requirements will be invited to complete an online assessment. This step evaluates your cognitive abilities, situational judgement and critical thinking skills. Preparation is key – practice similar tests online to familiarise yourself with the format.

Virtual Assessment Centre

If successful in the online assessment, you will be invited to participate in a virtual assessment centre. This stage includes activities such as group exercises, individual tasks and behavioural interviews. It is an opportunity to demonstrate your problem-solving skills, teamwork and alignment with the Department's values.

Reference checks

We will request referee reports from the references you have provided. These reports will give us insight into your qualifications, work ethic and suitability for the program.

Merit pool and offers

Once all stages are complete, candidates deemed suitable will be placed in a merit pool. From here, offers are extended as positions become available. If you receive an offer, it will be conditional upon clearance and vetting requirements.

Clearances and onboarding

Successful candidates must complete the Department's security clearance process. This involves providing documentation and undergoing background checks. Once cleared, you will be ready to start your journey with the Department.

Tips for a Successful Application

  • Be thorough and timely: Submit all required documents and meet deadlines for each stage
  • Prepare for assessments: Practice problem-solving, critical thinking and interview skills.
  • Be authentic: Use each stage to showcase your unique skills, experience and passion for working with the Department.
