The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) assists employees, employers, contractors and the wider community to understand their workplace rights and responsibilities and enforces compliance with Australia's workplace laws.

Our work environment is shaped by a range of factors such as changing business conditions and changes in the labour market, consumer behaviour and workplaces themselves.

The FWO has approximately 900 staff nationally based in all capital cities and regional locations. We are offering Graduate roles in Canberra but also in cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Our Fair Work Ombudsman is Sandra Parker who is based in our Melbourne office.

Employees at the FWO are approachable, friendly and hard-working. Some of the roles at the FWO include Fair Work Inspectors, HR Advisors, Customer Service Officers, Policy Advisors, Lawyers, Finance Officers and the list goes on!

The main functions of the FWO include:

  • Providing education, assistance, advice and guidance to employers, employees, outworkers, outworker entities and organisations.
  • Promoting and monitoring compliance with workplace laws.
  • Inquiring into and investigating breaches of the Fair Work Act.
  • Taking appropriate enforcement action.
  • Performing our statutory functions efficiently, effectively, economically and ethically.

FWO is committed to a culture where people feel included and know their diversity is valued. Our diversity and inclusion strategy focuses on three key areas:

  • Building diversity – we ensure access and opportunity for all.
  • Fostering inclusion – we increase awareness through training and sharing our experiences.
  • Enhancing potential – our leaders drive and exemplify an inclusive, flexible and collaborative workplace.
